Before looking at Bentley’s racing plans for 2015, it’s worth stepping back to see just how far the Bentley racing team have traveled.
When Bentley built the new Continental GT3, they built it as a race car designed to do a decade’s worth of service.
Rooted in the design of the road-ready Bentley Continental GT, the Continental GT3 shares many of the characteristics of its civilian brother including the same iconic silhouette. But as there is no space for luxury on the racetrack, the GT3 has been stripped of the superfluous and fine-tuned for increased performance.
Everything unnecessary to driving performance, from double-glazing to wood veneers has been pulled from the GT3; even the traditional panels have hand-crafted, carbon fibre replacements. The result of these efforts is a Continental that is over 1,000 KGs lighter than its road-built counterpart.
Thought the traditional Bentley luxuries are nowhere to be found, the high-quality craftsmanship car-lovers have come to expect in the Bentley-brand is right where it belongs: at the very heart of the GT3.
The racer is powered by a booming 4.0 litre, twin-turbo engine—a close-cousin of the engine used by the modified Continental GT V8.
At the moment only two Continental GT3s compete in endurance races, but that number could potentially grow as Bentley – spurred by early success – looks at ways to increase its commitment to the racing circuit.
Via Bentley Product and Motorsport Communications Manager, Mike Sayer:
“After a successful debut season which saw the Continental GT3 win three races on two continents, and with the Works team and drivers finishing second in the Blancpain Endurance Series, 2015 sees growth of our programme. This year, we have Works-supported teams racing on three different continents, and customers taking their Continental GT3s to new countries. The Works team will compete in the Blancpain series again and tackle the fearsome Nürburgring 24 Hours for the first time. As always, Bentley will be racing to win, and go one better than our championship runner-up position last year.”
