Aston Martin has announced a new 4.0 V8-engined DB11 to sit alongside the 5.2-litre V12 model. The new 503bhp V8 is twin-turbocharged and shares no common components with the naturally-aspirated 4.7-litre V8 that’s currently offered in the Vantage V8.
Visually, the DB11 V8 has a few subtle styling features that distinguish it from its twelve-cylinder stablemate. From the front, you’ll note that the DB11 V8 headlamp bezels are dark compared with the polished aluminium finish of the V12. And while the V12 model has four black bonnet vents, the V8 has two, finished in titanium mesh. Both models come as standard with 10-spoke alloy wheels in silver, but those on the DB11 V12 are diamond-turned. There’s also a wide choice of interior inlays, upholstery detailing and trim levels, all of which are available across the DB11 range.

Apart from being more efficient, turbocharged engines also develop higher levels of torque across a broader rev range. The new 4.0 Aston Martin bi-turbo proves the point; it develops a peak 675Nm at around 2000 and holds that level until past 5000rpm. This gives the DB11 V8 an eager, sporty character, with instant throttle response in any gear and a crisp V8 bark to the exhaust note. 0-62mph takes just 4.0seconds with a top speed of 187mph. By comparison, the DB11 V12 hits 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches 200mph.
Out on the road, it’s not about the difference in performance between the two models, but personal preference. The DB11 V12 roars; the V8 growls. At full throttle, either will make the hairs on the nape of your neck stand on end. It’s a nice dilemma to have…
